Inner LifeSpiritual Direction

What to expect

A regular conversation, at your pace.

You bring whatever is stirring: a decision, a loss, a restlessness, a question of faith, a sense that there must be more. The director listens deeply, asks follow-up questions, and helps you pay attention to your own inner life and to God's movement within it.

Rev. Ryan Irmer in a spiritual direction conversation, seated across a small table from a visitor in a quiet, lamp-lit room with a quilt on the wall.

Rooted in the Ignatian tradition

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is an ancient Christian practice: one person walking alongside another in their life with God. You talk about what's really going on, and a certified director listens intently and helps you notice where God is already at work.

Inner Life is rooted in the tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Jesuits in 1540. That means:

  • God can be found in all things, not only in church.
  • Your inner life speaks. We notice what draws you toward God and what pulls you away.
  • God is the true director. I won't tell you what to do; I'll help you listen and respond.

Why spiritual direction?

Every one of us has a physical, a mental, and a spiritual side.

To become the best version of yourself, I believe you have to give your time to all three. Spiritual direction is where the spiritual side gets fed — and where it begins to flourish.

Inside the hour

What happens in a session

It's a conversation. You talk about what's going on in your life, and I listen and ask questions that help you notice where God is at work. I won't tell you what to do, and you set the pace.

Settle in

A few quiet moments to slow down and be present.

Talk it through

You share what's on your heart. I listen and ask questions.

Look ahead

We notice where God may be leading. Any decision is always yours.

A typical session

First step
A free 20-minute conversation over Zoom to see if it's a fit.
Length
About an hour (50–60 minutes).
Rhythm
Most people meet about once a month.
Format
In Person or via Zoom, whichever serves you. In-person sessions meet in Long Valley, Watchung, Princeton, or Warren County, NJ.
Fees
$50 – $100 per session, with reduced-fee spots available. Ask, and we'll find a way.

Is this therapy?

No. Spiritual direction is not counseling, diagnosis, or treatment, and it doesn't replace mental-health care. It's a companioning relationship focused on your spiritual life. If something arises that calls for a therapist or other professional, your director will gently encourage that support.

Who it's for

Anyone drawn to a deeper interior life — whether you're rooted in a faith tradition, returning to one, or simply searching. People often come during transitions, loss, burnout, or seasons of big questions. Athletes and those in high-pressure environments are especially welcome.
